WHAT IS THE LEBOWSKI NIGHT (aka Weekend)?

In 1998, 10 years ago this month, the Coen brothers (Oscar winning directors of “Fargo” and “No Country for Old Men”) released The Big Lebowski. Shot in an LA film-noir style that pays homage to Raymond Chandler, the film’s story (and title) are based in part on his detective novel, The Big Sleep.

Instead of gritty detective Philip Marlowe, our “hero” is Jeffrey Lebowski, a stuck-in-the-'60s hippie type. Preferring to be known by a different handle (nobody calls me Lebowski – I’m The Dude, man) he deals with the ins and outs of life by going bowling and hanging out with his eccentric friends. The initial critical reaction, and the box-office receipts, were lukewarm. Many people did not completely “get it” the first time they saw the movie. Critics complained that the plot was dumb and seemed to lead nowhere (although many of Chandler’s novels had even less coherent storylines).

Then an interesting thing happened. When the film was released on DVD, many people found after repeated viewings that there were more levels to discover in the oddball characters and the densely literate, brilliantly circular dialogue. People found they could watch the film over and over again, and never get tired of seeing it. Therein lies the true genius of the film, and the real secret of its enduring appeal and ever-growing cult popularity: the brilliant writing of the Coen’s. Like life itself, the story frequently does not make a whole lot of sense. It is in the relationships, and the dialogue, that the importance (and the humor) abides.

The Dude’s character (largely based on the producer of the Coen’s first movie, Jeff Dowd) is drawn into a kidnapping plot through a case of mistaken identity, and decides to turn amateur sleuth. In between misadventures with his hotheaded ‘Nam vet buddy, Walter, and slow-thinking friend, Donny, the Dude goes bowling and works his way through the “very complicated case.” A mysterious cowboy (Sam Elliott) narrates the tale at the beginning, middle and end of the film, giving the story a timeless, mythic feel.

A decade after its premiere, The Big Lebowski has grown into one of the all-time classic cult films. The movie has a loyal following of die-hard fans – Achievers (the name taken from the film script). Two such fans, Will Russell and Scott Shuffitt are the creators of the ''Lebowski Fest.'' They have organized conventions all across the country, and in the UK, where fans attend late-night movie screenings, bowl, drink Oat Sodas, and wear costumes as characters from the film. There are live bands, costume and trivia contests, and most important of all: the perfect opportunity to employ quotes from one of the best and funniest film scripts ever written. In fact, most Achievers feel that there is a quote from The Big Lebowski to address any situation life can throw at you.

We’d like to welcome you to this proud fraternity by inviting you to our Rutland County Parent Child Center’s fundraiser. Following in the Lebowski tradition, the RCPCC Lebowski Weekend will have “a lot of ins, a lot of outs, a lot of what-have-you’s - it’ll be completely unspoiled, man!”

So as Walter says: “Come on Dude, let’s go bowling...”
